Re: science vs. the "institution" of science

not really ...

where do you think the funding and influence/direction over
academia comes from?

That all depends on the particular college you are talking about. Some
corporations give special grants to colleges and offer internships to
students to fund research -- mostly it's pharmaceutical companies,
engineering companies, etc. None of the producers of "penis
enlargement pills" make such contributions to education. In fact,
Penis enlargement, which was a central topic in your post, is the
product of small, fly-by-night companies which have no ties to
academia.

Furthermore, direction and influence of the scientific establishment
(the institutions of science) is not controlled by corporations at
all. If that were true, we would not have seen such widespread
condemnation of smoking and tobacco by the scientific instritutions of
America during the Big Tobacco trials. The Tobacco companies had to
hire their own shill scientists to speak for them, but the
establishment was firm that smoking is bad for you, and that it's
addictive.

The institution of science in America is fiercely independant of
corporate influence, to the extent that it regularly denounces
products that corporations sell, or policies that do harm to people.
If it were not for the scientific institutions in America, we would
not have discovered that Phen-FEN was dangerous, that PROSAC and
Ritalin are abused and over-prescribed, and that other famous and
money-making products are actually hazardous. If America's scientific
establishment were directed and influenced by corporations, as you
suggest, research that shows their products to be harmful would be
silenced. It isnt't, so you're wrong.

I like the idea of academia, its just naive to think it is
the beacon some think it is, one day perhaps it will be, but
it isn't now

Dale, you obviously don't know what you're talking about, and are jsut
making this stuff up as you go. You should carefully research the
facts before making ignorant comemnts.
