I agree that it is creepy, especially when the Republican Party seems
to be sliding into "anti-science." Not only are they offended by
evolution being taught in the public schools, they are also offended
by environmental concerns, anti-pollution measures, endangered
species, etc...
'sliding into' ?!
They started a stampeded towards it with Reagan in 1980s race and
haven't slackened since. Teaching creationism has been on the Republican
national platform since then (not every year, but at least one of Reagan's)
and many state Republican platforms every election for many years.
"Scientists are just welfare queens in white coats." R. Reagan, early
1980s. It's been downhill ever since.
