This review tackles the central claims of "Expelled" that science
represses ID, bringing up the science of chirality:

"Schmidt disagreed, pointing to recent research into the left- and
right-handed orientation of amino acids, which has revolutionized
chemistry, he said. That discovery could never have been made with
intelligent design as a basis, he said, and proving intelligent design
in the first place would be impossible.

Anyone have a clue as to what recent research Schmidt is talking
about?  It must be well known since it has revolutionized chemistry. ;-)

Also, I am curious as to why Schmidt thinks that a belief in ID
could have prevented a revolutionary discovery in chemistry.

Actually, I gave a short synopsis of the answers to both of your
questions.

Other posters have answered (again) why ID is such a science-
stopper.

But here's a source for what Schmidt was likely talking about:

http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/04/080406114742.htm

Whether Schmidt's talking about both the circular polarization of
light from neutron stars and the way homochirality arises, I'm not
sure, but they're both discoveries that real science makes and that ID
does not.

This also shows up the claim that we have no answers to abiogenesis,
which hasn't been true since Urey-Miller anyhow. The truth doesn't
get in the way of IDist lies, though.
