And this is precisely the suggestion that Richard Dawkins makes in his
response to Ben Stein. Perhaps, he notes, life was delivered to our
planet by highly-evolved aliens. Let's call this the "ET" explanation.

Stein brilliantly responds that he had no idea Richard Dawkins
believes in intelligent design! And indeed Dawkins does seem to be
saying that alien intelligence is responsible for life arriving on
earth. What are we to make of this?

Up until this, I thought that D'Souza had some fairly decent points to
make - I even defended him in another thread on his point about science
sometimes tacking on anti-religious things that aren't part of science* -
but it is clear now that the man is a total idiot.

Mind you, Dawkins, doesn't come out of this with much credit. He's not only
a seasoned participant in media interviews, he also has direct experience in
making documentaries, so he knows full well that only a portion of any
interview will be included in the final version so why on earth did he even
start talking about panspermia?

It wasn't panspermia being discussed - it was bioengineering by
aliens. But that doesn't matter - if pressed on a hypothetical
question like "What if there was intelligent design?", or "What if
abiogenesis on earth was too unlikely in the time available?", then
you are going to bring in aliens if you're honest, and gods if you're
an alien sycophant.

So I think Dawkins scores on honesty and accuracy.

Bear in mind that this is not his first time
to get caught like this, there was the "Dawkins stumped for an answer"
video; he had already had his fingers burnt with a film company
misrepresenting themselves to him so surely he should have been far more
careful this time around. As Oscar Wilde said "To lose one parent may be
regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness."

BTW, I know that PZ Myers was deceived by the producers about the nature of
the film but I haven't seen any suggestion that his actual views were
misrepresented or shown out of context in the film. Is that correct?

(*The fact that he is an idiot doesn't change my mind about that particular
point - stopped clocks etc.)
