I agree with this statement. It's what bothers me about "Expelled".
It should be okay for professors to look into intelligent design.
I agree completely. In fact it is okay for professors to look into
intelligent design, just as it is okay for them to look into a flat earth.
Nobody will arrest them for espousing intelligent design, just as nobody
will arrest them for arguing that the earth is flat. Will they win the
respect of their colleagues for either of these arguments? No, because they
have the same degree of scientific support. But one is not treated
differently from the other, nor should they be. It may still turn out that
the earth is flat, despite all the evidence to the contrary.
For example, it should be okay for people to postulate irreducible
complexity; the result has been a number of interesting counter
arguements against the concept but these counter arguements didn't
exist until irreducible complexity was proposed.
This is all of part of the scientific process and the punish these
profs seems very wrong to me.
