Yes, one species begat another.
No, no mother was ever a different species from its offspring (unless
we arbitrarily draw a line as between Old French and Modern French).
Another way to look at this is to consider our own persons.
As we age, we change. We grow taller, then we grow wider. Our hair
changes, our bodies change. If a person didn't see us for a few years,
they would compare our present look to the last time, years ago, that
they saw us, and they'd likely declare " my, you've changed. "
But, we didn't see much noticable day to day change, did we ? No.
It happened, but so slowly to our time senses, that we didn't notice
it.
Now, up the time used to do something like this to species, and the
changes day to day, year to year, generation to generation ( Which for
a lot of species isn't more than a year. ), and you can get some major
changes.
