That's exactly what he meant by 'god does not play dice with the
universe'. The alternative to cause and effect is random chance. Free
behavior is either random or causal, or a combination of the two.
Causal events can become highly complex so they appear to be random
but are just unpredictable, not random.
I know you don't like this idea but I don't like coffee, doesn't mean
coffee isn't real.
If the universe was 100% predetermined we would still be free as it's
impossible for use to predict how things are going to turn out so use
limited information. Choosing is effectively picking a course of
action based upon all we know and are - which is complex enough for it
to be indistinguishable from uncaused actions in many cases. Like I
said, free will is an illusion one that people use because that's how
the perceive the world and always will do.
Our perception isn't always the same as reality. All the phrases
people say are rooted in perception, not a superhuman knowledge of
reality.
