gradually, and therefore needn't have been designed."
Can't argue with that, but the term "Darwinian evolution" is very
dated, from the era of whalebone corsets and phlogiston and the
ether. Science has gone well beyond the 19th century.
As a label for the topmost level of division of hypotheses about
origin of species, it seems to me the term is still totally useful:
- Mosaic myths of Judaism: Supernatural being created every species specially.
- Lamarckian hypothesis: Lifeforms strive to improve over time.
- Darwinian hypothesis: Mutations happen at random and natural
selection enhances the numbers of more-fit at expense of less-fit.
- Intelligent [Design sic] Tinkerer hypothesis: Supernatural being
directs evolution toward end goals we cannot fathom.
When debating Creationists or IDiots, the term "Darwinian
evolution" is perhaps the best term for specifying which of the
four kinds of hypothesis we are favoring.
