What is the National Academy of Sciences doing by
spending its time rebutting creationist drivel?

A traditional task of Academies of Science
is to advise their government. (without being asked to)
Especially when said government doesn't want to hear it.

The book is not targeted at the government:

According to the article:

"it is intended specifically for the lay public"

Free copies should be available at every supermarket checkout.

...and...

"?We wanted to produce a report that would be valuable and accessible to
school board members and teachers and clergy,? said Barbara A. Schaal, a
vice president of the academy, an evolutionary biologist at Washington
University and a member of the panel that produced the book."

The National Academy of Sciences taking creationism seriously
enough to write a book about the underlying scientific issues
may just add fuel to claims that it is worthy of serious attention.

Surely the best way to deal with the issue would be to treat the matter
as a memetic infection, and to offer advice about how to intercept
the spread of the disorder, what to do if a loved one is infected,
how to keep your children away from infected individuals - and so on.

It is time the uneducated were at least educated enough to understand
the arguments.
