If that sentiment is widespread, and I fear that my google search
confirms that it is actually preached in some fundamentalist circles,
then we have far worse things to fear and combat than mere elimination
of the teaching of evolution.
I am afraid that this sentiment is more widespread than one would
wish. However, it appears to be directed at other religions as much or
more than toward evolution or secular humanism. All it takes is a firm
commitment to the first of the ten commandments. This was indeed what
drove the religious zealots during the purported time of Jesus. The
fact that the Roman Emperors claimed divinity was seen as a direct
assault to the first commandment.
