Advocates for Gonzalez said in a release distributed Tuesday that they
will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. Monday in Des Moines. There,
they said, they will discuss documents they contend will prove that
Gonzalez "lost his job" because he supports intelligent design, not
because he was deficient as a scholar.
Does. Not. Matter.
Tenure is a lot like marriage, and withdrawing tenure is a lot
harder than divorce. What the scholars at the astronomy department of
the University of Iowa have said is that they do *not* want to spend
the rest of their careers with someone like Gonzalez in the office
next door. It will look bad on their records. For the rest of their
lives they'll have to live with their peers chuckling behind their
backs, "He works with Gonzalez."
I mean, look at poor Lehigh University's biology
department. They've had to put a disclaimer on their website
declaiming their embarrassment over Behe's pro-ID stance. I don't
think UoI wants to have to do the same thing. It's like putting a bag
over one's head.

"Department Position on Evolution and "Intelligent Design"
"The faculty in the Department of Biological Sciences is committed to
the highest standards of scientific integrity and academic function.
This commitment carries with it unwavering support for academic
freedom and the free exchange of ideas. It also demands the utmost
respect for the scientific method, integrity in the conduct of
research, and recognition that the validity of any scientific model
comes only as a result of rational hypothesis testing, sound
experimentation, and findings that can be replicated by others.
The department faculty, then, are unequivocal in their support of
evolutionary theory, which has its roots in the seminal work of
Charles Darwin and has been supported by findings accumulated over 140
years. The sole dissenter from this position, Prof. Michael Behe, is a
well-known proponent of "intelligent design." While we respect Prof.
Behe's right to express his views, they are his alone and are in no
way endorsed by the department. It is our collective position that
intelligent design has no basis in science, has not been tested
experimentally, and should not be regarded as scientific."
In addition, Dr. Behe has placed an "Official Disclaimer" on his
faculty home page:
http://www.lehigh.edu/~inbios/faculty/behe.html
"Official Disclaimer
My ideas about irreducible complexity and intelligent design are
entirely my own. They certainly are not in any sense endorsed by
either Lehigh University in general or the Department of Biological
Sciences in particular. In fact, most of my colleagues in the
Department strongly disagree with them."
