Only if it is the same density as the material it is displacing.

Imagine a fresh water cube in fresh water. When it melts, it fills
the hole it was displacing.
Imagine the same cube in salt water. It displaces a smaller volume.
How will it fit the same amount of melt water into the smaller hole?

That's a good way of explaining it but you got it precisely backwards.
Fresh water is less dense than saltwater, so when the ice melts it
will fill the hole and will then have some left over.

I think you misread his post, since that's exactly what he
said. The "hole" is smaller in salt water due to the greater
density of the water (the cube doesn't displace as much salt
water), so the fresh water from the melted cube will
overflow the hole, raising the overall level.

If you are unsure which is denser, fresh or salt, consider the
difference between swimming in a pool or the ocean. The ocean is much
easier to float in. The Dead Sea you can practically walk on,
especially lately.
