IS MORMONISM PHILOSOPHICALLY TRUE? --
OK, I'll bite. What is the definition of "philosophically true",
and how does it differ from "factually true" (if you'll excuse
the redundancy).
"What is truth?"
~~Pontius Pilate,
John 18:38
I define *philosophy* to be 'truth seeking', so that the
Apostle John Taylor's quoted words, i.e. anything being
"philosophically true", denote:
2 + 2 = 4
Scientifically or by any other name, Mormonism, or
the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ, is "philosophically true",
indeed encompassing all truths.
"It is all over the face of the Bible. It stands beyond the power of
controversy. A wayfaring man, though a fool, need not err therein."
~~Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith,
Apostle of Jesus the Christ,
Section Six 1843-44 Pg.370
Though I was a fool (and still am, albeit to a lesser degree), I gladly
received the truth when the Light thereof shined upon and through me.
To paraphrase Joseph the Seer, anyone who loves the truth in his heart is
prepared to receive the truth, and when it is given him, he identifies it
as such, oft times the Holy Ghost confirming. Empiricism of the five senses
(seeing, hearing, touching, smelling, tasting) and of scientific experiments
conducted by talented men provides secondary evidences at best.
Humble yourself before your Maker to receive the truth. By exercising
faith, or sincerely pondering and praying without knowing *ALL* the facts,
the Eternal Father will add on to the truths that you already have.
30 For behold, thus saith the Lord God: I will give unto the children of men
line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little; and
blessed are those who hearken unto my precepts, and lend an ear unto my
counsel, for they shall learn wisdom; for unto him that receiveth I will
give more; and from them that shall say, We have enough, from them shall be
taken away even that which they have.
(Book of Mormon | 2 Nephi 28:30)
By taking away even that which unbelievers and apostates have, it means when
a person rejects Light, the consequence thereof is Darkness, or absence of
Light. The devil then takes over, though the notion of 'devil' to most is a
ridiculously funny one. But not only have I felt the effects of evil as have
all men and women, I have also seen fallen spirits, or devils, with my own
eyes. My testimony of these and other things is true, even if the world
scorns my testimony.
24 For all shall be revelators in the day when I come in clouds of glory to
their destruction, for they shall see signs in that day, but not unto their
salvation, saith the Lord God of Enoch.
25 For do I not speak face to face with those who be with me in heaven,
saith the Lord?
26 Then how is it that I cannot also speak unto them who wander in darkness
at noonday, who wander in darkness and despair upon the earth as anciently?
27 For are ye not as precious unto me as they, saith the Lord?
28 Therefor if I the Lord God condescend to send thee an eyewitness as
them of old, condemn him not, for if ye receive him whom I send, ye shall
receive me also, and this according to mine appointment, which is after
the Order of the Ancients, even Melchizedec of old.
Revelations of Jesus Christ 3:24-28
(Received by Art Bulla, Messiah to Ephraim and Manasseh,
or the One Mighty and Strong,
Apostle of Jesus the Christ)
"... my religion is natural philosophy. You never heard me preach a
doctrine but what has a natural system to it, and, when understood, is
as easy to comprehend as that two and two equal four. All the revelations
of the Lord Almighty to the children of men, and all revealed doctrines
of salvation are upon natural principles, upon natural philosophy.
...
All is doubtful, except what comes from the Almighty in His revelations
to His people."
~~Brigham Young,
Apostle of Joseph the Seer,
Journal of Discourses, Vol.4, Pg.203, Feb. 1, 1857
40 For intelligence cleaveth unto intelligence; wisdom receiveth wisdom;
truth embraceth truth; virtue loveth virtue; light cleaveth unto light;
mercy hath compassion on mercy and claimeth her own; justice continueth its
course and claimeth its own; judgment goeth before the face of him who
sitteth upon the throne and governeth and executeth all things.
41 He comprehendeth all things, and all things are before him, and all
things are round about him; and he is above all things, and in all things,
and is through all things, and is round about all things; and all things are
by him, and of him, even God, forever and ever.
(Doctrine and Covenants | Section 88:40 - 41)
45 The earth rolls upon her wings, and the sun giveth his light by day, and
the moon giveth her light by night, and the stars also give their light, as
they roll upon their wings in their glory, in the midst of the power of God.
46 Unto what shall I liken these kingdoms, that ye may understand?
47 Behold, all these are kingdoms, and any man who hath seen any or the
least of these hath seen God moving in his majesty and power.
48 I say unto you, he hath seen him; nevertheless, he who came unto his own
was not comprehended.
49 The light shineth in darkness, and the darkness comprehendeth it not;
nevertheless, the day shall come when you shall comprehend even God, being
quickened in him and by him.
50 Then shall ye know that ye have seen me, that I am, and that I am the
true light that is in you, and that you are in me; otherwise ye could not
abound.
(Doctrine and Covenants | Section 88:45 - 50)
44 ¶ While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them
which heard the word.
45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as
came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift
of the Holy Ghost.
46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered
Peter,
47 Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have
received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
48 And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed
they him to tarry certain days.
(New Testament | Acts of the Apostles 10:44 - 48)
5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.
(Book of Mormon | Moroni 10:5)
So "philosophical truth" can be defined as belief without
supporting evidence, or alternatively as acceptance of
someone's claims that the truth has been revealed to
him/her, also without supporting evidence. IOW, not related
to fact.
OK.
