The sad part is, this means their faith is *extremely* weak already,
and they've based their entire lives on it.

The very fact that we exist, apparently perfectly happy without their
mythologies, infuriates them. Those who have true confidence (faith?)
in their stories are far more tolerant. But the unshaven, foul-mouthed
drunkard atheist suits these champions of ignorance just fine, because
he reinforces their claim that we must be (fill in the blank) in order
to be decent people. But unchurched folks who pay their bills and tend
their gardens and send their kids to school drive them nuts.

Our very existence is an insult to them. It's saying, "By our refusal to
believe as you do, we're implying that you're wrong, which means you're
deluded."

They enter the conversation with that chip on their shoulder.

Of course, they also enter the conversation agreeing with their god that
atheists *deserve* to be tortured forever.

Note how they - meaning both the clueless rubes and the seasoned
scammers - always start out attacking atheists, but eventually come
around to admit that *mainstream science-literate thesists*, who have
no problem with evolution, "macro" and all, are the real threat.

Who might be justified in taking the most umbrage at the opening of the
conversation, I wonder?
