I recommend this book as a relevant read for t.o regulars:

- many of the issues apply to science/biology teaching
- it helps explain the mindset of generations of "educated" Americans
- non-Americans might notice corresponding biases in their own
country's schoolbooks

As a side effect, you may develop a new revulsion for Woodrow Wilson. :-/

Wilson was the most racist American president since Jefferson Davis.

Davis may have been a president, but it stretches the meaning to
call him an American president. Considering that most of the
U.S. presidents of the last third of the nineteenth century were
former Union generals - and we know the effect of commanding a
racially mixed force on even a slave-owner like George
Washington - the number of presidents who reasonably could have
been expected to be competitors with Wilson for that title isn't
as large as one might at first surmise. That said, I really am
not going to defend Wilson's overall record. Entangling the
U.S. in World War I - and silencing opposition with the courts -
was possibly the greatest single blunder by an American
president in the 20th century. There might have been no
reparations imposed on Germany without the American thumb on the
European balance of power.
