Actually "mutation" is just a word for "change", and a mechanism
unknown to Darwin.

occurs is not a mechanism.

Near as I can figure, he thought "nature did it" somehow, because God
wouldn't have, but he was unaware of the mechanism enabling change,
diversity, variation.
He simply could not have known.

No one claims that he knew the exact mechanism, but he did know there
was a mechanism. The mechanism, when found, was consistent with Darwin's
discoveries and reinforced our understanding of evolution. You, still,
have no clue what is going on, intentionally or not, I cannot tell.
