The foundation of the modern Racism was actually laid by the
Charles Darwin's theory of evolution.

People look at this wrong. They never consider how difficult it was
for a book published in 1859 (or was it 1857?) to go back in time and
create the entire horrific history of, for example, a few centuries of
Indian genocide and African slavery (for a replacement labor force) in
the entire new world. Darwin clearly had to work very hard on that
part.

For the foundation of modern racism it might be more apt to look
toward Arthur de Gobineau's work _The Inequality of Human Races_,
which was published several years before Darwin's origin I think. My
edition has part of his works and gives a range of dates (1853-55) for
the entirety. Anyway he inspired infamous race theorists to come,
namely Houston Chamberlain and Alfred Rosenberg. Chamberlain inspired
the Nazi racists (bridging a gap between Bayreuth and the Nazis who
came later) and Rosenberg was one of the most notorious Nazi race
propagandists. Darwin (however bigoted he may have been for his time
period) pales in comparison to these three.
