earth were on the ark, and asked how the dinosaurs could then have all
drowned in the flood, all we heard in response was the sound of crickets.
Stephen
Well that wasn't as difficult as you may think. In Genesis 3:14, "So
the LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this,
"Cursed are you above all the livestock and all the wild animals! You
will crawl on your belly and you will eat dust all the days of your
life." which could be intrpreted to mean that that something
catastrophic happened at that time (about 1000 years or so before
Noah). This event -might- mean that the serpent (possibly
representative of all dinosaurs) was radcially changed at that time
and, hence, was not (in the form of dinosaurs at least) among the
creatures taken aboard the ark. I have no idea one way or the other
but it's plausible enough to avoid the complication you propose.
I don't get it. Here again is a quote from Genesis:
"...every wild animal according to it's kind, all livestock according to
it's kind, every creature that moves along the ground according to its
kind, everything with wings. Pairs of all creatures that have the breath
of life in them came to Noah and entered the ark. The animals going in
were male and female of every living thing, as God had commanded Noah."
I mean, how many different ways can it say that every living thing was
taken on to the ark? "All living creatures that have the breath of
life." "male and female of every living thing."
So according to Genesis, there were no species of animals wiped out in
the flood, right? The above quote is just one of four or five saying the
same thing. There are few things emphasized as strongly in the Bible.
Even the above quote says "every" or "all" animals five times!
This interpretation preserves the consistancy of the Genesis account
even if that account is otherwise defective. Another, somewhat related
point, is that it's probably not that useful to dismiss a point of
view simply because the one holding it defends it imperfectly. Were
that a valid approach to settling controversies, those defending
evolution would be in at least as much trouble as those defending
creationism.
So what happened to the dinosaurs, in your view?
Stephen
I was clear: -if- the serpent was changed in the passage I quoted,
what was it changed from? We know it changed to what seems to be snake
like so that whatever it may have been prior to this curse became
extinct. I m suggesting the extinct form may have been the dinosaur.
If a comet or meteorite was the method whereby the curse was effected,
then -all- dinosaurs of every kind became extinct in that event. Did
it really happen this way? Who knows, but the fact that dinosaurs are
extinct and snakes are now representative of the "kind" serpent,
confirms a correct sequence in the Genesis account.
The point is not that the Genesis account is correct but only that it
is -not- contradictory. The inconsistency you propose is not there.
Since Noah came along much later, long after the dust had settled from
the affects of the curse, the "kind" of serpent would have been what
we now call snake. All Noah had we the remnants of the serpent "kind".
As I said, we don't have to believe any of the Biblical account of
this curse, the global flood, Noah and his ark or even in the
existence of God to see that the account(s) are consistent.
