It seems like something besides speed has to be keeping the moon where
it is.
My impression is that the moon _does_ fall down. It is constantly
falling down. Unfortunately, its sideways motion means that although
it is constantly accelerating downwards, the resultant velocity is
never reaches in the proper direction to hit the earth.
One nice explanation of an object in orbit is that it is falling into
the earth, but it is moving forward fast enough to keep it from actually
hitting the earth.
