The ol' smoke and mirrors trick eh? Where's your enzyme? Got a
peptide to strech in some gel? No? What are ya, some flake
homosexual or something?
Derdag, you sorry sod, they're not even clear on what makes people male
and female. From genetic studies of people with ambiguous gender, it's
clear that it's not just having an X or Y chromosome that does the
trick. There are additional genes in complex configurations: genes
which, when turned on, activate or suppress maleness; and yet others
which activate or suppress femaleness. They don't know yet what all of
them are, and that's just for the physical characteristics. Then
there's
evidence that some of the genes are expressed directly in the brain,
and
not just through hormonal influences. (Scientific American, June 2007).
And you want *the* gene that expresses homosexuality. The answer will
be
very complicated, so give it ten or twenty years. Until then, have a
nice cup of STFU and suspend your conclusions.
Ten or twenty years from now, the whole field of sexual orientation
research
will be moribund. There's no way that the search for a biological basis
to
homosexuality can continue forever. Either scientists succeed in finding
one
(which is unlikely), or else they don't - and in either case, that would
be
that.
This would be equally true, I am sure, of the athletic gene, the good-
looking gene, and the intelligence gene.
Do you suppose that the other sciences will be finished in 20 years,
or just genetics? Shouldn't they be done with astronomy by now?
They've been doing it longer, after all.
You are missing my point completely. The biological determinists are
studying genetic influences on homosexuality only because they want to prove
that homosexuality is biologically determined - and maybe to find a way of
altering it through gene therapy. Obviously they will either succeed in
doing this, or else, much more likely, they won't. Research into the subject
would continue past that point only if people were motivated to study it
through idle curiosity, and I think one can rule that out.
