It's an obvious inference from the existence of a common genetic code,

To rephrase your sentence"
" It's an inference from the existence of a common genetic code. And
it would have looked like a typical bacterium."
How do you actually know this? Where can I read the journal article
that established this.

I have no doubt that our genes are 95% or something similar to apes.
But a PHD geneticist athttp://www.icr.orgsaid
that a watermelon, jellyfish and a cloud all consist of 98% water -
yet they did not derive from a common ancestor.
He said he found this 98% chimp similarity quote "amusing".

He is a moron and you are an imbecile. He isn't a PHD geneticist, he
is a fundamentalist Christian PHD geneticist. That is a little like
being an arsonist fireman. He believes dozens of things on less
evidence than we have for common descent and evolution and he believes
them because assholes like you have perpetuated them for generations.

Now go away. A REAL troll, one who is mildly entertaining, has
hijacked your thread.

By the way, humans are apes.

Nope, and for the same reason dogs are not wolves.

Here is where you are wrong.

Dogs may not be wolves. They are both canids and that is certain but
domesticated dogs are not gray wolves. They can interbreed
succesfully, which used to be commonly thought of as the measure of a
species. However, they are different enough that it is satisfactory to
put them both in the canids and let it go. It is sometimes thought
desirable to divide the canids into the jackals (three species) and
the "wolves," all the other candids, but that isn't the common
practice.

I'm glad you agree.

Men ARE apes. The equivalent to saying "dogs are wolves" would be to
say that men are chimpanzees, which they aren't. There is a larger
grouping that includes men and the OTHER apes. It has a scientific
name and you will accept it under that name but you won't accept it
under ape.

That's correct, because the MEANING of the word 'ape' prohibits it,
and you cannot change the meaning of the word 'ape' arbitrarily to
override it.

You even have some reason not to do so. However, among
educated people, the word ape covers the same ground.

No, education has nothing to do with it.

In addition, in speaking on the subject in a non-technical setting, it
is useful for people to be told that there is a biologically sound and
proven grouping that includes men, bonobos, chimpanzees, gorrillas,
orangutangs, gibbons and siamangs and does not include monkeys with
tails.

I accept all of this as true.

It is best to call this group apes.

This is false, for reasons described above. The meaning of the word
'ape' makes it false to say so. If you remove the word 'men', it is
true.

People know the word and
can learn the slightly altered meaning.

They have no reason to do so. There is no reason to attempt this to
begin with. The language is fine as it is.

Names for animals are, by
their nature, biologically technical terms, even when in the
vernacular.

This is false. They are merely terms of reference. "Hey, look at that
goose!"

It is always good to work to make the usage more in line
with the biological facts.

False. blank assertion that flies in the face of accepted language
acquisition.

It is useful to tell people this because it is the biological truth
and because it upsets some people. Many of the people who post here
want to help people learn. I want to upset people. Both goals can be
met.

Men are apes.

False.

Also, why are you so unfailingly nice to backspace. He is a dishonest
piece of *** and doesn't deserve anything but scorn.

I have not done so. I recall telling some one of these creationist
dogs to shut the *** up and go away.

backspace: You are dog***. Shut the *** up and go away.
