I'm hardly an expert. I took French in grade school and High school
and some Italian in college. I have even made occasional use of my
meager command of both. Based on that (and some osmotic transfer
living in NY City), I have found Spanish fairly easy to read. Many
years ago someone bought my (Italian) grandmother a bible they thought
was in Italian. It was only some months later that one of my aunts
looked over her shoulder and noticed that the bible she had been
reading after dinner each night was in Spanish. She shrugged and said
she knew, but it was OK.

I have seen examples of Portuguese, Catalan and even Provencal. All
seemed at least partially decipherable. The little Romanian I have
seen seems to be a different animal altogether; some Star Trek alien
language with the occasional Latin word thown in. That
notwithstanding, I once met a woman who claimed that Romanian was the
most faithful to the original Latin of all the Romance languages.
