Thanks for posting this. It turns out to be a very interesting story.
It only seems queer to you because you need to see certain elements of
modern science in a queer light.
This link is better. And it has a pitchur!:

"The Lilliputian galaxy NGC 5011C was formerly believed to be the
gigantic companion of another galaxy, NGC 5011B. But new measurements
show that the two are actually very far apart, with the first one much
dimmer and 500,000 light years away - therefore far smaller, than
previously believed. The larger is actually 13,000,000 light years
away - 26 times as far.
"The resulting illusion was the cosmic equivalent of one of those
classic old giant vegetable or animal postcards, where distance is
used to create a false sense of scale." ...
"According to theory, before there were billions of galaxies, there
were gazillions of dwarf galaxies, which combined to make galaxies.
The process is still underway, with the Milky Way still in the process
of gobbling up two nearby dwarfs - better known as the Small and Large
Magellanic Clouds (visible in the skies of the southern hemisphere).
"The discovery is useful in another way as well, says astronomer Ivo
Saviane, who has confirmed Jerjen's measurements with a 3.6-meter
telescope at the European Southern Observatory in Chile.
""If (NGC 5011C) were the same distance (as NGC 5011B), it would be a
strange beast," said Saviane. It would not fit very well with what's
known about giant galaxies, he said. Jerjen's discovery makes NGC
5011C far more explicable."According to theory, before there were
