No moreso than snails have consciousness. I suspect we'll get
there eventually. Trouble is, of course, since computers are
accelerating their development and using us as the environment that
selects for their state, I suspect we're in for what the
science-fiction writers call a "hard liftoff."
Elf
It seems to me there is an important factor present in consciousness,
"intent," that a computer can never have without human intervention.
Tron, the movie speculates that the "controller" took over his
computer only to be defeated by the "programmer" who could find novel
ways around the Controller's traps.
How would a "Controller" take over a computer without some intent to
be satisfied? What kind of satisfaction would the computer controller
seek?
