Why Should Evolution be Taught as Science in Schools?

Instead of debating whether Evolution is correct, Intelligent Design
is correct, or some other explanation is correct, this subject
addresses whether either subject should be taught as Science in
schools.
Let me start off by acknowledging that I believe that life was created
by God, not be Evolution. I also believe a straight reading of the
Bible rules out Evolution as the mechanism. However, I don't believe
Intelligent Design should be taught in Science classes because it is
not science: Intelligent Design has no equations and does not allow
one to produce scientific discoveries beneficial to society. I
believe it is an historical fact, based on my acceptance of the
scriptures. It cannot be proven scientifically, but that does not
mean it didn't occur. (Most of you probably believe Julius Caesar
existed even though you can't prove it scientifically. You accept
based on a multitude of historical documents written about him, and
that appear to ve very credible.)
So the Intelligent Design in science class is out of the way for the
purpose of this particular debate. The remaining question is whether
Evolution be taught as science in schools. I am referring to macro-
evolution, or Darwinian evolution, basically the belief that today's
animal and plant life descended from a common ancestor. I realize
this is a layman's definition. What I want to do is distinguish this
type of Evolution from micro-evolution, the belief in changes in the
genetic makeup of a species over time. Microevolution is not what
most people are talking about when they discuss the Evolution vs.
Intelligent Design debate.
Please provide a more precise definition if you have one. The
important thing is that is should be what is being taught in
elementary and secondary schools.
The Debate
Why teach any science in schools? The study of chemistry has allowed
students to go on to discover new drugs benefitting society. The
study of physics has allowed students to go on to build aircraft and
automobiles. The study of the human circulatory system has given
students a head start on a medical career devoted to healing sick
people.
What tangible benefits has the teaching of Darwinian evolution
produced?
