Synapsis?

[possible dupe - either the moderatobot or my local server seems to have
eaten several of my posts earlier this evening]

What is the current state of hypotheses on the mechanism of synapsis?
The first few sources I've found on the web seem to suggest that it's
still a complete mystery.
