It seems to be that just about everybody has acknowledged this for

(Check Wikipedia for "Inter caetera".)
The nearly spherical shape of the earth was known to the Greeks as early as 300 b.c.e. In fact Eritosthanes, the manager of the Library of Alexandria computed the circumference of the earth to within five percent of its modern accepted value by assuming the sphericity of the earth. Later measurements reveal the earth to be an oblate spheroid which one should expect since the earth revolves around its axis. The centrifugal force flatten the earth a little at the poles and makes it bulge a little at the equator.
Anyone acquainted with the writings of Aristotle and Plato believe the earth was spherical (or nearly so).
