Re: Cost of sex - a bargain!

<snip>

Let me recast this for the dogmatically entrenched. Think of it as a
simple exercise to make me look stupid(er).

I am a selfish gene. I am capable of making a female go down the route
of producing multiple copies of herself without the aid of a male. - to
pull the stunt of asexual defection and reap that juicy Cost of Sex.

If I do this, she will get to produce multiple copies of herself,
instead of half-copies. (Not sure how it will really benefit HER), but
there you go. My other-allele pals will gain because they will get to
produce more copies of themselves per offspring. Not sure how either
fact benefits ME but there you go.

How do I accomplish the trick?

Say I become a meiosis inhibitor. If I could choose my locus, where do
I secrete myself such that I actually CAN gain copies vs every sexual
non-defector variant of myself, if I mutate?

I can go on chromosome 1... No, hang on, that is in every sexual
offspring, male or female. I don't gain copies, if the wild-type
females match asexuals 1 for 1 in terms of simply producing a baby
(male or female).

Chromosome 2.... No, doesn't work for the same reason.

I know - the X chromosome! Thats where all the female bits reside! Two
problems
a) Boys need meiosis too.
b) X genes spend a lot of time in male bodies. Every male contains an
X.

OK: you tell me.

How can I actually reap this multiple-copy reward for the female and,
more importantly, for copies of me? I am ready, willing and able to
mutiny, if you just tell me where to sit.

(Hint and reminder: I need to gain copies of my LOCUS, not the variant
I formed from, FASTER than a sexual female. Therefore I need to
secrete myself in a place she doesn't copy when she creates males. But
mitochondria will not do!)
