But God (excuse the saying),
I think like an engineer, and when I look at biological systems, they
now blow my mind.

Why is it the engineers that always have this problem?

I realize that before I was thinking too damn simply
about biological systems, at every level, and the more I appreciate
them, the more I have a sinking feeling.

You're still thinking too simply. Why is it that people stop thinking when
they get to the molecular level? You need to delve deeper and think about
what happened at the subatomic level to make the molecular level what it is.
The molecular level does what it does simply through playing by the rules,
and that includes the beginning of life as well as its evolution. If you
want to find a god or a designer, you'll need to look more deeply still.

But unfortunately, when looked at in the right way, biological systems
exhibit a helluva lot of design and true "beauty,"

When looked at in the "right" way? This reminds me of a Columbo episode,
where the murderer was a magician pretending to be a psychic. There was a
little boy who was helping Columbo in some way (IMSMR), and at one point
Columbo's advice to him was "Always remember, it's a trick. Keep that in
mind and then you can figure out how it's done." If it seems like magic,
it's a trick - either a trick that's being played on you, or a trick that
your mind is playing on you.
