Re: Math In D.I. Land

@Tiny Bulcher
"People who actually want to learn something should go read books."

That sounds good on the surface, and yes people should go out and
research the basics of evolution before they comment on an origins
newsgroup, but that's not the only group we're talking about. For
instance, "My preacher says that there has never ever been a fossil
found with transitional features, i.e. a cat with gills."

Now, they can search and search til their heart's content and they'll
never find a cat with gills, which may make them say "Hey! my preacher
was right! evolution is a lie!" If only they had come to a newsgroup
like TO and someone rationally explained to them that cats would never
have gills and that there are transitional fossils, just not the
ridiculous nonsensical example your preacher gave. Sometimes 5 minutes
on a good newsgroup can give the same or better results than hours of
research.

@Gerry Murphy
"The people who get insulted are the chronic liars, the folks who
insist they are right no matter how often they're shown to be wrong and
the folks who repeatedly use logical fallacies to 'prove' their point.
And these folks do it year after year. "

I understand, but who are you trying to convince? The insults can only
serve 2 purposes:
1. make yourself or others laugh
2. make the person feel sheepish or insulted by your words and perhaps
maybe they'll even go out and do some research before they post again.

I think we know that most biblical literalists take criticism and
insults as badges of honor, so surely it must be the former (#1). If
that's the case, again I must stress, by doing this, you run the risk
of losing the chance of converting a rational creationist. However, in
some cases, I understand that someone makes such an ass of themselves
that you simply can't resist. No one can blame you for that :-)

@Gerry Murphy
"For most of us this is mental recreation. But we sometimes give in to
the shear exhiliration of engaging in a battle of wits with unarmed
men."

Indeed. Some people are just too easy.

@Desertphile
"Be sure to let the door knob hit you on the ass as you leave."

Wow, we were doing so well up to this point.

@Desertphile
"You can change this, however, by being the first Creationist on the
planet to offer evidence in suppoort of Creationism."

Contrary to what you may believe, creationism and design are not
synonymous. Perhaps another time I'll discuss the merits of design to
see if my reasoning is flawed in believing in its validity. This,
however, was not the purpose of my commenting on this particular
thread, so I'll stick to the topic at hand.

@Matt Silberstein
"Wow, and you don't like how the other side responds. I have an idea,
instead of making these vague attacks how about you present an evidence
based argument in favor of design. Here is my question: what else,
other than the infinitely vague "it was designed" can you tell us? Can
you tell us how many designers? How long they worked? Anything at all?"

See above reply. Again, another time perhaps, but for now, I'll stick
to the topic of my original comment.

@Bill Hudson
"After the first part of your post, I suspect that this may be 'bait'.
"

Not at all. I was simply giving perspective on my position so as to
avoid confusion about said position.

I'll respond to chris.linthompson@xxxxxxxxx directly in a separate
post.
