Something in another thread prompted me to look again at
Mr. Alex Branning's "Integrity in Academics" web site, and it
seems that he's has his three minutes of fame in making a
presentation to the Los Angeles public school board.

The Integrity in Academics site http://www.integrityinacademics.com/
has the letter he wrote (to a "Mr. Secretariat" who is really Mr.
Crane)
and the "Science Philosophy" statement that says no "fact" in science
is really a fact and that evolution (specifically) must be taught as
"theory"
with scope for discussion of questions about that theory.....
All I could see in a quick browse through google hits were a couple of'
mentions on right-wing blogs.
Perhaps it's time we ask him back here to explain to us what science
is.

LA's biggest employer is the Defense Industry.
Not for years. The spending on the kinds of stuff LA did has dropped
and lots has moved elsewhere (Huntsville, for example). Tourism
probably is the largest employer but entertainment brings in at least
as much money. Defense was about equal of those two, but not for at
least 10 years.
Science are WMDs, things
that go bump in the night and leave people dead and dying. Of course,
that's not a fact... it's a theory. They make the weapons but no one
uses them, because that would be mean. The weapons are just a threat.
Everything to the contrary is just special effects. Living with that
much denial, you can perhaps understand why "facts" have no appeal.
If there is anything to what you claim about military spending having
an effect on the local consciousness, rest assured that the financial
shift to tourism and entertainment will quickly ground these folks in
reality again :P

But I am guessing from what I've seen that all subcultures and cities
and countries and ethnic groups have a general eversion to unpleasant
or tiresome facts, and in any large group of people there will be
little difference in this regard except in specific expressions - e.g.
the biblical literalists do not want to admit we are descended from
other apes; some feminists of the 1970s did not want to hear that there
were average differences between male and female brains. Nobody's kid
is at fault when they get in trouble with the cops. I'm not growing
old. Etc.
