I know there's no purposes (porpoises that still can't fly, yes). It
just strikes me that people are as dense as they are to think that a
fish would become a bird without going through the innumerable
evolutionary steps to get there.

Well, there's a 'Guiness' advert over here (UK) that shows fish turning
into birds (or possibly birds into fish, I can't remember). Cool ad, but
not the place to go for accurate science.
