So do I. It's the worst thing to happen to Usenet since AOL and WebTV.
I'm not sure I agree - Without groups.google.com, I would never have found out how to use Usenet.
Of course, some of you may disagree with me, claim that I shouldn't be on Usenet in the first place if I couldn't find it without google. To them, I say "bugger off."

(Who, by the way, has finally stopped using google groups. I've finally gotten Thunderbird to work, specifically by using news.datemas.de as my newsserver. Let's see if I can get used to it or if I'll have to go back to google.)
Incidentally, and while on the subject of people who shouldn't be able to get on usenet, do any of you know how to killfile with Thunderbird?

I've gotten the impression that Thunderbird isn't as good as some other newsreaders when it comes to implementing killfiles, but I've come up with a system that basically works. What I tend to do is a "virtual" plonk, rather than a complete plonk. Here's my method:
1) Select a message from the person you want to plonk.
2) On the "Message" menu, select "Create filter from message..."
3) That brings up a dialog box with the "Filter name" field selected. It starts with the sender's email address in that box, but if it isn't the same as their screen name, you probably want to change the filter name to be their screen name.
4) Go down to the "Perform these actions" box and select one or more from the list. It starts with "Delete message", which should work for a true plonk, but sometimes I find myself curious about what the plonkee actually said, when reading someone's reply, so I change that to "Mark as Read" and then I add "Label message as..." "Plonk" (I've customized this - I don't remember what it used to be). That colors the message line purple for me, which indicates to me that it is from a plonkee. I also use different filters to color message lines other colors for things like Chez Watt and POTM messages.
5) If you've already killfiled the plonkee and they've nymshifted, then just copy the email address out of the "Create filter from..." dialog box. Then, go to the Tools menu and select "Message filters...", find the plonkee and edit the filter to add the new address.
HTH.
Thank you. I've done this, and have a new question :P
Should it work retroactively, or will I first see the effect when Ye Annoying Posters post new articles?
