When and IF someone does indeed "turn the other cheek", that is,
something so rare and ridiculous then it could be said the directive in
the Bible corresponds with the rare act in reality. BUT, however, this
for the most part IS NOT reality. NOBODY (for all intents and purposes)
"turns the other cheek" when they are smacked. In reality they hit back
or fall or fold or run or beg for mercy.
The reason Jesus said this was to establish an impossible standard that
only He could actually fulfill (on the cross He asked the Father to
forgive them = "turning the other cheek") . His intent was to make
sensible persons conclude they cannot perform His standard WHICH leaves
the only other possible standard to relate to Him and God : the
gospel/way of faith - a standard that everyone has the ability to
perform (unlike law/works).
I can't imagine a more twisted theology, Ray. You actually believe that
you can be completely nasty to other people, but as long as you have
faith in God/Jesus/Paul/Gene Scott/Ray Martinez (sorry, but I'm not sure
which of these apply), then you are good to go.
Have a look at the phrase "Turn the other cheek.", Ray. Notice that it's
phrased in the form of an imperative statement, an order.
I completely agree and have always completely agreed. It is an order
and Jesus meant what He said.
Jesus, IN the N.T. spends the entire Text contrasting TWO and only TWO
paths: Mosaic works of law which He changed to even a more impossible
standard when He said in the Sermon on the Mount, even if ye THINK the
thought it is equal to having done the deed in God's eyes. The SotM is
ONE extreme example of the TWO paths.
The other path is the way of faith (which is the gospel). This path,
God allows, faith alone, apart from the works of the law, to be
accepted by Him.
Here is the error concerning the first path: ignorant people think it
is a game of horseshoes (closeness counts as long as you are trying).
NEGATIVE. The penalty of failing to keep any of the law is death - no
exceptions. Nobody can keep the law perfectly. Jesus was the only
Person and God killed Him as a sacrifice for sins. THIS PATH is now
abrogate IF the second path is accepted and acted upon.
I want your Biblical source regarding the "penalty of failing to keep
any of the law is death - no exceptions." This certainly doesn't conform
to anything that I ever learned about the New Testament.
This is fundy theology. I'm too pressed for time now to look up the
chapter and verse but one verse says "For all have sinned and fall
short of the glory of God" and "The wages of sin is death."
