The meanings of words is established by usage.

Yep, although the meaning is established by the usage of more than one
person.

All modern languiages
evolved without any knowledge of ancient life. Names for animals are
exclusively, then, those of living animals (mythological ones
excepted).

What about mammoths?

The one exception is the word 'dinosaur', which was
invented specifically in the 19th century to refer to the large
extinct animals that were being discovered and studied then.

So...what's the word for all the small extinct animals, like Compsognatus?

Even if Aves are descended from Dinosauria, that does not mean that
'birds' are 'dinosaurs'. The words were never intended to be used that
way and cannot so be used.

Um...wasn't it just you that said "The meanings of words is established by
usage."? Large numbers of people use the word in just this way.
