That's silly. The 2nd law doesn't apply to the earth as a whole, but
it does apply to closed systems within the earth.

That's why I'm answering this, rather than leaving it to the
thermodynamics experts - whom, I expect, will be soon heard from.)

The 2nd law of thermodynamics applies to the whole earth. It
applies to open sytems as well as to closed systems.
