I'd like a better understanding of the debate

Hello.
My name is Diego, and I became interested in the Creation/ID/Evolution
debate some
time ago.
Since I live in Italy, it's difficult for me to understand exactly what
this is
all about.
So I'd be very grateful if somebody could give me a better
understanding of the debate.
For example, from my readings it seems that creationism (or ID
advocates) feel
that Darwin's teory of evolution is a threat to their faith.
Can somebody explain this to me? In what way is a threath? If it's not
a threat,
what are the reasons of this opposition to Darwin's ToE? Did I get it
completly wrong?
Thank you everybody.
Diego Pigozzo
NOTE:
I'm not posting here to neither change anybody's mind nor to have fun
of somebody.
I have a real interest in understanding the feelings of the people
involved.
