Oh, you bet. The Medes and Persians were two ancient peoples from the area
that's Iran today. They were antagonists but eventually were united in one kingdom
by Cyrus the Great. This about 2500 ago. Since in English 'Mede' sounds like 'meat'
and 'Persian' sounds somewhat like 'poison,' the saying becomes a pun on the
saying 'One man's meat is another man's poison.'

Way to stomp on the subtle interplays, dude...

Ooops! Sorry. I should have posted the usual disclaimer that
an explanation takes all the fun out of it. But if he didn't know
his Assyrian from Holofernes in the first place, there wasn't
much there to take the fun out of, eh?
