And so the struggle for reproductive success between breathing and
nonbreathing

As in a struggle between the living and the dead? Not likely. Those who
are dead don't compete with the living so whatever struggles those who
are now non-breathers participated in are now continued in wherever
dead organisms go according to your religion of choice.

results in the breathers to be selected for, thus
explaining why we breathe.

Natural selection only explains why the genes that help animals breathe
long enough to breed become more frequent in the gene pool once they've
appeared in it. This still leaves lot of room for other questions, like
how the lungs developed, whether or not some supernatural being caused
those breathing genes to exist in the first place, which Higher Purpose
is served by having all these breathers around and who made air.

Or to put it in Dawkins words; Darwin made
it possible for us to give a sensible answer to the question "why are
breathers?". We no longer have to resort to superstition when faced
with such deep problems. There are breathers because they are better at
reproducing than non breathers.

If you're troubled by the question "why are there breathers" and find
yourself unhappy with the biological answer, you need to remember that
it's quite possible for other answers to the same question to be true
simultaneously. Even if the genes that make you a good breather have
stayed in the gene pool because they were selected for, it might still
be that the answer to the question "why are we here" is "because God
created us", "we're here to do good", "because it's the Grand Plan of
Fate" or something more eloquent and symbolic.
