also, george deutsch's phone number is:

[snip]

he is, you recall, the 24 yr old political hack who told NASA
scientists to call the big bang a 'theory' since it has religious
implications. it may be worth it to call him and...gently...inform
him that if he wants to be a taliban, there are caves in afghanistan
waiting for him.

I really don't think that people should be publishing other
people's phone numbers on the web.

well, i got it from the web...a nasa website actually...

I don't care if creationist slime might do the same thing.

You are not likely to change his mind and if anything this
could simply cause claims of harrassment.

nope. he's a public flack and the reason his number was on the web is
because he's a public affairs officer and the website listed his phone
number to be contacted for questions.

he's a govt official. aint nuthin' wrong with calling govt officials.

I did not say otherwise. But I would say it might not be a good
idea for everyone to find phone numbers, even those that can
be found via public sources, post them in front of thousands
and ask them to call him. If this sort of thing becomes
common, no government official would in their right mind
allow their number to become public and hence no one, but
those selected by the political elite, will be able to call
such officials. The only ones we would be able to contact
would be those provided with a staff large enough to screen
such calls. Of course calls to them will simply be
reduced just to simple numbers: x call for it and y calls
against it. Low level employees/beaurocrats and appointees are
those in the government who we can really can still pick
up the phone and expect to be able to talk to them
directly. I would sure hate it if this somehow got lost.

And in the end, a polite phone call is more effective
then asking countless people to call. He can have
conversions with a few, but there is no way he can have
conversations with hoards of callers. I know if I
were in his shoes, I would simply become simply become
pissed.

Question: Am I right in assuming that this guy is low
enough that the phone number is not staff, but his actual
cell phone or office phone answered by him personally?

Obviously for those with large staffs who simply count
phone calls, then the more phone calls the better. After
all that is what the receptionist (or whatever title
he is given) is paid for.

Besides, efforts really should be more aimed at
those who give him his marching orders and who
hired him. Arguing with them might be like demanding
that a cashier lower prices when the higher-ups
are the ones who set the prices.

well i'm not sure anyone gave him marching orders. he probably's just
a part of the right wing christianist cabal that runs the US right now
and felt he was justified in slapping down the uppity scientists who
didnt have the benefit of his creationist insight.

We'll we can hold those "upstairs" responsible for not setting him
straight. I really doubt that those in power care very
much if we can harrass a low-level lackey. Higher ups only
care if we can put preasure on them personally or against
the causes or people they are loyal to.

On another issue, should we question why the job in question
is filled by a political appointee?
