In the 1950's when Britain had an active program of welcoming
immigrants from the 'colonies' due to a manpower shortage, many of the
children from places such as the Indian sub continent and the
carribean began to suffer from Rickets (vit D deficiency).
This health issue was solved by providing free vitD supplemented milk
to schoolkids.
While the free milk program is no longer in place (Thatcher, Thatcher,
Milk Snatcher!), vitD is routinely used as a milk supplement to this
day (in the US and UK).
