I have a punching bag in the garage which I use every couple of days. I
don't expect to ever "defeat" it, but there are benefits nonetheless.
So too, throwing my reasoned arguments against those whose minds are
untouched by facts or reason keeps me sharp; it trains my replies to be
succint and calm, and I seem to actually be learning more myself (as an
old dog, I find it a pleasant surprise). And I was once a child in a
creationist household, trying to find my own way to reality without the
aid of usenet. So, for the sake of potential escapees as well.
In the story of the 47 Ronin a sympathetic fighter was left to guard a
bridge while the 47 ronin went on to seek justice. We are like the lone
fighter on the bridge, diverting those who might otherwise bedevil the
"real" science news groups. Heh. Only without the pain.
Besides, if I don't do this I'll probably just end up wasting time...
