Of Pandas and Spontaneous



On page 43 of the second of edition of _Of Pandas and
People_ there is the following definition (of sorts) of
"spontaneous":

...(When we hear the word "spontaneous," we think of something sudden
or that happens all at once, but the word simply means unaided by
outside intelligence, regardless of the amount of time required.)...

Okay, they are right that spontaneous has nothing to due with
time, but since when does the definition of spontaneous
in science have anything to do with intelligence. Lots
of things happen without intelligence that are not spontaneous.
