Yep. Evolution doesn't happen to perfect self-replicators.

And sometimes the fossil record shows a great amount of detail in the
evolution of variations. For that matter, _living_ mammals provide a
fine-grained example of variation ranging from the house cat, who
detest walking on a wet sidewalk, to whales, who only bother to come
up for air now and then.

How come evolution denial depends so heavily on ignoring all the best
evidence and focusing on areas where the deniers think the evidence
is weak?

Could you give an example of what you're asking about?

The coelacanth is dubbed "a living fossil", but as I understand it
it can be readily distinguished from the fossils of its ancient kin.
