The Privileged Planet - Author Interviewed

Well, more like a humping than an interview but Hank Hanegraaff had Jay
Richards, co-author with Guillermo Gonzalez of _The Privileged Planet: How
Our Place in the Cosmos is Designed for Discovery_ on his _Bible Answer
Man_ program today Sept. 6th and will have hin again tomorrow. Those
interested can listen over the web (once the program archives) at:
<http://www.oneplace.com/Ministries/bible_answer_man/>

I assume they would put their best case forward first. Here it is:

In order for the Earth's Moon to make a perfect eclipse of the Sun, the
Earth has to be as just the right distance from the Sun. It turns out that
that distance is also the perfect distance to have the right temperature
range for life and the existence of the Moon prevents more wobbling of the
Earth which would result in climatic changes too great for life.

But more than just this anthropic fine-tuning, without eclipses we would
not have learned many things about the Sun and the rest of the universe.
Thus this fine tuning not only permits us to observe but enables us to make
the *fruitful* scientific observations that we have made, thus suggesting
the universe is set up to further a purpose of humans to learn.

Similarly, if Earth was in the center of the galaxy, instead of between
spiral arms, not only would the radiation have prevented us from existing
but the radiation would have masked our view of the rest of the universe,
preventing us from doing cosmology.

I'll leave it to the reader to spot the unstated premise (separate and
apart from factual errors/mistatements) and assess its justification.
