And have at least clothes, water, and flashlight in your car.

Absolutely. I live in one of the most disaster-threatened areas in
the country (San Francisco earthquake area), and I have made some of
these plans, but I could do better. I have about five days of water
stashed in my garage, but all in one basket. I need to move some of
it to a closet, and I need to stock up on foil-wrapped granola bars.

Foil-wrapped granola bars are one of the best emergency foods of all
time. They are compact and weather- and pest-resistant. I know from
experience that they keep at least three years. Best of all, they are
palatable enough that I don't mind eating my old supply when I refresh
it with more.
