Google was no immediate help. I'll have to dig a little deeper. From
what I've been hearing, science and math students in the US *from the
US has been steadily declining for years. And I would place the blame
at least partially on the hostile atmosphere toward science that has
been slowing gaining momentum.

Foreign science students used to come here for education, then stay for
the jobs. Lately, they've been coming to the US for education, then
going home to work in their native land's computer, energy, or biotech
firms. Soon, I fear, they will not even come here to be educated.

On the bright side, my daughter (US born and bred) just started at
Washington State University last week as a math and physics dual major.
On the dark side, she said she's perfectly willing to learn Swedish or
Mandarin or Indonesian if necessary to keep working in math or physics
after graduation. On the darker side, that means other people's kids
will learn Mandarin or whatever so they can serve fast food to the
tourists. Ah, well. At least the Yankee work ethic will serve us well
as the next major third world country.
