During a plenary lecture today at a meeting on biological mass
spectrometry, I was suprised to hear the speaker address the
ID issue. His topic was cytokine signaling pathways and in about
the 4th slide, after reviewing some of the entangled strategies
of reuse and functional subversion of varoius transcriptional
activation factors, he actually explicitly noted that the
whole of it was clearly a result of evolution and not designed
as "No engineer would have created such a hodge-podge".
I'm not sure what the audiance reaction was but aim to ask a few
folks later.
My impression is that it reflects a growing level of exasperation
from people who never bothered to take the kooks seriously before.
Then again, some might just suppose it means that the designer
wasn't an engineer or if they were, they must have gotten a
mail order education from one of those fly-by-night diploma
mills. That and of course a fascination with beetles.
