USA: More corn going to non-feed uses
Analysis of American yellow maize consumption patterns by the US
Department of Agriculture has revealed a declining share for feed use
even as the total uptake has increased. Ten years ago, feed manufacture
took 75% of the 175 million short tons of corn consumed in the USA. By
2003 the consumption total was up to 200 million tons, but the
proportion taken for feeds had fallen to 70%.
Latest indicators foresee an all-uses figure of 222.5 million tons for
the period from September 2005 to August 2006, but the 149.2 million
tons expected to be used for feed would represent no more than 67%.
USDA analysts say the 10-year trend for maize has shown feed use
growing at an average rate of 2% per year and the food sector's
demand rising by about 4%/year. However, industrial uses have been
averaging growth of 6% annually. Industrial usage, particularly for
ethanol, used only about 21% of the total corn crop back in 1996
whereas today its share is up to 31%.
