Hannes Alfven (Dec. 11, 1970 Nobel Lecture for the Physics Prize):

The hetegonic processes took place 4 to 5 billion years ago. The evolution
of the primary product of these processes into our present-day solar system
has consisted of a number of relatively slow changes: geological forces have
transformed the structure of the planets, tidal effects have braked the
spins of some of the bodies (especially of the satellites), collisions have
taken place in the asteroidal belt, and there have been meteor impacts on
the planetary surfaces, etc. All these effects are important for the
reconstruction of the state of the system immediately after the hetegonic
processes ended. It is only after « correcting » for them that the solar
system data we observe today are of value for the reconstruction of the

Hannes Alfven pontificated on the big stage and pleased the world by
contradicting the second law of thermodynamics, no different than the Big
Bang physicists he correctly opposed.

James Clerk Maxwell:

Toby Grotz, U.S. electrical engineer:

A review of the well known biographies by Cheney, Hunt and Draper, and
O'Neil [3], [4], [5], reveal no mention of Tesla's knowledge of Sanskrit.
O'Neal however includes the following excerpt from an unpublished article
called Man's Greatest Achievement:

"There manifests itself in the fully developed being , Man, a desire
mysterious, inscrutable and irresistible: to imitate nature, to create, to
work himself the wonders he perceives.... Long ago he recognized that all
perceptible matter comes from a primary substance, or tenuity beyond
conception, filling all space, the Akasha or luminiferous ether, which is
acted upon by the life giving Prana or creative force, calling into
existence, in never ending cycles all things and phenomena. The primary
substance, thrown into infinitesimal whirls of prodigious velocity, becomes
gross matter; the force subsiding, the motion ceases and matter disappears,
reverting to the primary substance."

According to Leland Anderson the article was written May 13th, 1907.
Anderson also suggested that it was through association with Swami
Vivekananda that Tesla may have come into contact with Sanskrit terminology
and that John Dobson of the San Francisco Sidewalk Astronomers Association

David Tombe in one of his papers quotes O'Neill (different spelling) with
the Grotz attribution, the above words about Tesla's view of the aether
vortex.

Clearly, Tesla the inventor of the AC motor wasn't the first to grasp this
essential concept, for Joseph Smith and Brigham Young and James Clerk
Maxwell all understood this; so do Art Bulla and Maurice Allais now; Father
Abraham understood this before them all. (But I'm guessing if Tesla were
alive, he would agree with Alfven on Evolution, not only on the primacy
of electrodynamics in natural philosophy.)

Feynman and Alfven had in common two contradictory things, keen scientific
intellect and blind faith in Evolution; each of these two Nobelists
worshipped
his own Gott -- for Feynman, his own neocortex (brain), and for Alfven,
self-organizing space plasma, or Thor. (I suppose Thor is one representation
of Baal.)

The aether vortex idea originated with the Bernoullis and Euler (the latter
a devout Christian), then applied to describe electromagnetic phenomena by
Helmholtz and Kelvin and then Maxwell, who succeeded at last (the latter two
of these three were devout Christians), though that does not mean everything
about electromagnetic phenomena are understood, as soberly recognized by
Louis Neel, the French Faraday (as I see it) who shared the 1970 Physics
Nobel Prize with Hannes Alfven, of whom the Kingdom of Sweden would be
justified in being proud of, except he made himself a son of perdition
through his active support of the Theory of Space Plasma
Evolution/Self-organization (into planets and stars), no different from
Darwinism in anti-Christ spirit.

In 1948, Néel made another fundamental discovery with his explanation of the
strong magnetism found in the ferrite materials, of which magnetite is one.
.... It is
remarkable that magnetite which in the hands of the Chinese was used to
produce the first compass, is in fact not ferromagnetic, but, in Néel's
terminology, ferrimagnetic.

Néel could present an accurate description of the behaviour of the new
synthetic magnetic materials and so explain hitherto puzzling experimental
observations. These developments have been of considerable technical
importance, e.g. in computer memories and in high-frequency techniques.

Néel has made many other contributions, such as investigations in the theory
of magnetic domains and the discovery of the effect found in small
particles, called super-paramagnetism.

Professor Néel. I have attempted to describe your major discoveries which
follow in the great French tradition of studies of magnetic phenomena.

I have particularly emphasised your discoveries of anti-ferro- and
ferrimagnetism which have been of such importance in the shaping of modern
theories of magnetism.

Louis Néel

Néel was indeed a worthy successor to the French tradition of research in
magnetism initiated by Pierre Curie, Paul Langevin, and Pierre Weiss. But he
is better known in France as the one who developed Grenoble into a major
international center of research after the war. ...

Néel's successes in research and scientific administration were helped by
circumstances; they came mostly from a clear awareness of his aims and
possible limitations, and were stimulated by a great willpower. His sharp
mind concentrated on scientific models of his own, simple enough to be
developed on the back of an envelope, but powerful because they were well
adapted to the problems at hand and general in nature. His greatest
successes came against the stream of fashion. He published to the last in
French; his work during the war was poorly published and thus hardly known.

Néel developed the concept of antiferromagnetism, in which two
interpenetrating atomic lattices are treated in a molecular field
approximation. Manganese and chromium showed the predicted susceptibility,
with a peak at what became known as the Néel temperature. These proposals,
made in 1936, were confirmed in 1938 on manganese oxide, an insulator with
no possible contributions from metallic paramagnetism.

To describe antiferromagnetism, Lev Landau and Cornelis Gorter suggested
quantum fluctuations to mix Néel's solution with that obtained by reversal
of moments. But in a macroscopic crystal with magnetocrystalline anisotropy,
the nucleation would involve a magnetic wall of high energy. Using neutron
diffraction, Harry Shull confirmed (in 1950) Néel's model.

This model had been extended in 1947 to describe ferrimagnetism of spinel
ferrites: Néel assumed that the atoms of the two lattices have different
moments. In 1956, rare earth garnets were discovered in Grenoble, where the
ferrimagnetism of Fe ions is coupled to the rare earths. This flexible
family led to hard (noncubic) magnets and to soft and lossless (cubic) ones.
At a dinner held to celebrate Néel's receipt of the Nobel Prize, his friend
Hendrik Casimir stressed that these contributions were essential to Philips
research laboratories' development of ferrite-based devices. Bell
Laboratories and Japanese firms could have made similar statements.

Applications were at the root of Néel's work, which looked at larger scales.
His interest in hysteresis dated from the war: Indeed, he personally
supervised the magnetic protection of all main vessels of the French navy,
during the spring of 1940, from magnetic mines by applying a short strong
field, opposite in direction to Earth's, thus reducing the ships'
magnetization due to Earth's field.

Néel was gifted with his hands and relaxed by making furniture. ... Néel's
difficulties with antiferromagnetism and inconclusive discussions in the
Strasbourg international meeting of 1939 fostered his skepticism about the
usefulness of quantum mechanics; ...
